The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the better pick for travelers who use bonus categories, Chase Travel, hotel credits, benefits and travel protections. The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is better if you want a simple $95 travel card that earns unlimited 2x miles on everyday purchases, no questions asked. The main decision is whether you prefer Chase’s higher category upside or Capital One’s easier flat-rate structure.

TLDR

  • Choose the Sapphire Preferred if you want 5x through Chase Travel and 3x on dining, gas, EV charging, online groceries, streaming, and select vacation homes.
  • Choose Capital One Venture if you want unlimited 2x miles on everyday purchases.
  • Both cards charge a $95 annual fee. Sapphire Preferred has a limited-time 100,000-point bonus after $5,000 spend in 3 months; Venture offers 75,000 miles after $4,000 spend in 3 months.
  • Chase wins for travel protections and category bonuses; Venture wins for simplicity.

When Chase Sapphire Preferred Wins

The Chase Sapphire Preferred wins if you spend heavily on travel, dining, gas, EV charging, streaming, online groceries, or vacation rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo. Its bonus categories give it more upside than Venture for cardholders willing to use the right card for the right purchase.

It also has the significantly stronger travel-benefits package + way more credits compared to the Venture. The card includes a $100 Chase Travel hotel credit each account anniversary year, up to $120 for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS every four years, and travel protections such as trip cancellation/interruption insurance, trip delay reimbursement, baggage delay insurance, auto rental coverage, and emergency evacuation and transportation coverage. AND free DashPass/Apple TV (terms apply).

On top of that, the Sapphire Preferred is currently running a limited-time welcome offer: earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's a bump from the standard 75,000-point offer and adds meaningful upfront value over Venture's 75,000-mile bonus.

The key caveat is that World of Hyatt transfers are changing to a 4:3 ratio for new Sapphire Preferred cardmembers who apply on or after June 15, 2026, and for existing eligible cardmembers beginning October 1, 2026.

When Capital One Venture Wins

Capital One Venture wins if you want fewer rules. Unlimited 2x miles on every purchase makes it better for uncategorized spending, including insurance, medical bills, contractors, tuition, and other purchases that would earn only 1x with Chase.

Venture also has the easier welcome-offer requirement: Earn 75,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. Miles can be used to cover eligible travel purchases, book through Capital One Travel, or transfer to 15+ travel loyalty programs.

Which Card Is Better Overall?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is generally the overall better card. Stronger travel protections, $600+ worth of credits/benefits, and better transfer partners. Capital One Venture is better for people who want one simple travel card that earns 2x on nearly everything.

Holding both can make sense: use Chase for bonus categories and travel protections, then use Venture as the 2x catch-all card. For a three-way view, see our Sapphire Preferred vs Strata Premier vs Venture.

FAQ

Can I hold both the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture?

Yes. They are issued by different banks, so holding both can make sense if you want Chase’s bonus categories and Venture’s 2x earning on everything else.

Which is better for everyday spending: Chase Sapphire Preferred or Capital One Venture?

Capital One Venture is better for everyday uncategorized spending because it earns unlimited 2x miles. Chase is better only when your purchase fits one of its stronger bonus categories.

Which card has better transfer partners: Chase Sapphire Preferred or Capital One Venture?

Chase Sapphire Preferred has better transfer partners for most travelers, especially because of Chase-only standouts like World of Hyatt, United, and Southwest.

Is the Chase Sapphire Preferred annual fee worth it?

Yes; if you can use any of the Preferred's credits to their full value (eg $100 Chase Travel hotel credit, $120 Trusted Traveler credit, DashPass valued at $120, complimentary Apple TV subscription valued at $156, etc). If not, Venture’s simple 2x earning may be easier to justify.
