The mid-tier travel card category is getting more interesting because the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is changing in a major way in 2026. The annual fee is staying at $95, but Chase is adding new credits and bonus categories while also removing some perks: the 10% anniversary points bonus and (one of its strongest perks) 1:1 transfers to World of Hyatt for Sapphire Preferred cardholders.
That changes how the card stacks up against the Citi Strata Premier® Card and the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. The Sapphire Preferred is still one of the easiest travel rewards cards to recommend, but the answer is no longer as simple as “Chase has Hyatt, so Chase wins.”
| Feature | Chase Sapphire Preferred (Refreshed) | Citi Strata Premier | Capital One Venture Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | $95 | $95 | $95 |
| Travel portal earning | 5x Chase Travel | 10x hotels, car rentals, and attractions through Citi Travel | 5x hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars through Capital One Travel |
| Dining | 3x | 3x | 2x |
| Supermarkets / groceries | 3x online grocery | 3x supermarkets | 2x |
| Gas / EV charging | 3x (starting June 15, 2026) | 3x | 2x |
| Vacation rentals | 3x at select brands starting June 15, 2026 | 1x | 2x |
| Hotel credit |
The Chase Sapphire Preferred refresh makes the card more practical for everyday travelers who aren’t optimizing their points.
Starting June 15, 2026, the card adds 3x points on gas and EV charging, 3x points on vacation homes at top brands like Airbnb and Vrbo, an increased up to $100 total Chase Travel hotel credit, a trusted traveler credit of up to $120 every four years, a complimentary one-year Apple TV+ subscription when activated by December 31, 2026, and expanded travel protections.
The annual fee stays at $95, which is the best part of the refresh. Chase is adding several benefits without pushing the Sapphire Preferred into premium-card pricing. Plus, the DoorDash benefits remain the same.
On top of the refresh, the card currently offers one of the highest welcome bonuses we've seen: 100,000 points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. (Reminder: never go into debt for a credit card bonus. That is not a good idea.)
But the negative changes are real. The 10% anniversary points bonus is being discontinued for cardmembers who apply on or after June 15, 2026. Cardmembers who applied before June 15, 2026 continue earning the 10% anniversary bonus on eligible purchases made through October 1, 2026, with the final bonus awarded by January 31, 2027.
The bigger change is Hyatt. Sapphire Preferred transfers to World of Hyatt are moving from 1:1 to 4:3. That means 100,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points will become 75,000 Hyatt points instead of 100,000 Hyatt points. Cardmembers who applied before June 15, 2026 keep 1:1 Hyatt transfers through October 1, 2026. Cardmembers who apply on or after June 15, 2026 get the 4:3 ratio immediately.
For casual travelers, the new benefits may outweigh the losses. For Hyatt loyalists or Chase points optimizers, this is a major devaluation.
Chase stands out because of its unique partners and card-level benefits. United is useful for domestic travelers and Star Alliance awards, while World of Hyatt has long been one of the most valuable hotel transfer partners. Even after the Sapphire Preferred moves to a 4:3 Hyatt transfer ratio, Hyatt remains the best hotel partner in this comparison. The Preferred just becomes a weaker way to access it than it used to be.
The Sapphire Preferred's clearest advantage is travel protection. It has the best insurance package of the three cards, including primary rental car coverage, trip cancellation/interruption insurance, trip delay coverage, baggage delay coverage, lost luggage coverage, purchase protection, and extended warranty protection. The 2026 refresh also adds Emergency Evacuation and Transportation coverage, making this category an easy Chase win. Terms apply, but if travel protections matter, the Sapphire Preferred is the card to beat.
Let’s not forget the new credits and benefits: for a $95 annual fee, you get the most ancillary credits here compared to the other two options.
The Sapphire Preferred gets weaker for points maximizers, especially people who mainly used the card as a Hyatt transfer gateway.
Previously, the card had a very simple pitch: for a $95 annual fee, you could access Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partners at 1:1, including World of Hyatt. Since Hyatt is one of the most valuable hotel loyalty programs, that made the Sapphire Preferred one of the most efficient travel cards on the market.
Essentially, the 4:3 transfer nerf subsidizes the new benefits the Sapphire Preferred is offering. Is this good? Depends who you ask.
Most casual cardholders will likely care more about the new hotel credit, trusted traveler credit, gas/EV earning, and vacation rental earning. But for people who use maximally use their points, this sucks.
The Citi Strata Premier is the best card here for broad everyday category earning.
It earns 3x points on air travel and other hotel purchases, restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, and EV charging stations. It also earns 10x points on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked through Citi Travel. For a $95 card, that is a very strong earning structure.
The biggest everyday advantage over the Sapphire Preferred is supermarkets. The Sapphire Preferred earns 3x on online groceries, but Citi earns 3x at supermarkets more broadly. If groceries are one of your largest spending categories, that can make the Strata Premier a better daily card for grocery rewards.
Citi also has a stronger transfer-partner story than it often gets credit for. Citi’s unique advantage is American Airlines AAdvantage. That can be extremely valuable for travelers who know how to use American miles for Oneworld and partner awards, including flights on airlines like Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas.
The Citi card also includes a $100 hotel benefit, but it is less flexible than Chase’s hotel credit. Citi gives you $100 off one eligible hotel stay of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, when booked through Citi Travel or by phone.
The Strata Premier is best if you want strong 3x earning on everyday categories, value American Airlines partner redemptions, and do not care as much about Chase’s stronger travel protections.
The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card wins on simplicity.
Instead of making you track categories, the Venture earns 2x miles on every purchase. That makes it the easiest card in this comparison to use as a daily driver. You do not need to think about whether a grocery purchase is online, whether a merchant codes correctly, or whether another card would earn more.
The Venture also earns 5x miles on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. That can be useful if you are comfortable using the portal for certain trips.
However, Capital One’s transfer partner ecosystem is significantly weaker than Chase’s and Citi’s because it lacks a domestic US transfer partner. While, Capital One also has a unique angle with Japan Airlines, that is too narrow of a niche to make everyone happy.
The Venture also includes up to a $120 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, but is realistically best if you want simple 2x earning at the expense of simplicity of redeeming those rewards.
Choose the Sapphire Preferred if you want the strongest overall travel card. It has the best travel protections, useful Chase partners, 3x dining, 3x gas and EV charging starting June 15, 2026, 3x vacation rentals starting June 15, 2026, and an up to $100 Chase Travel hotel credit. The caveat is Hyatt: if 1:1 Hyatt transfers were the main reason you wanted the card, the Preferred gets less compelling after the 2026 change.
Choose the Citi Strata Premier if you want the broadest 3x categories. It is especially strong for supermarkets, restaurants, gas, EV charging, air travel, and hotels. It is also the only realistic option if you fly out of American Airlines hub.
Choose the Capital One Venture Rewards if you want simplicity. Earning 2x miles on every purchase is easy, and the card still gives you transfer partner upside and a trusted traveler credit (but note that Capital One miles are not necessarily easy to use).
After the 2026 refresh, we still think the Chase Sapphire Preferred is still the best overall $95 travel card in this comparison for many people.
Before, the card was easy to recommend because it gave you low-cost access to Chase transfer partners, including 1:1 World of Hyatt transfers. After the refresh, the Sapphire Preferred becomes more of an all-around travel card: better credits, stronger daily earning categories, and improved protections (at the expense of Hyatt).
That makes the comparison more balanced. The Citi Strata Premier is better for broad 3x earning and American Airlines partner redemptions. The Capital One Venture Rewards is better for people who want 2x miles everywhere and a simpler setup. The Sapphire Preferred is better if you want travel protections, Chase’s unique partners, and a more complete travel card package.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred is still better if you value travel protections, Chase’s breadth of credits/ancillary perks, and access to Chase’s unique transfer partners like United and Hyatt.
But the Citi Strata Premier is arguably better for everyday earning because it earns 3x at supermarkets, restaurants, gas stations, EV charging stations, air travel, and hotels. If you are based near an American Airlines hub, the Premier is definitely the better fit.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred is better if you want stronger travel protections, more bonus categories, and Chase transfer partners (like Hyatt and United). The Capital One Venture Rewards is better if you want simple earning because it earns 2x miles on every purchase. Just keep in mind that Capital One miles are not necessarily easier to maximize than Chase or Citi points, especially for domestic U.S. travelers, because Capital One does not have a major U.S. airline transfer partner like United or American.
There is no universal winner because the three programs overlap across several major international partners. Chase is strongest for Hyatt and United, Citi is strongest for American Airlines, and Capital One is strongest if you want simple 2x miles earning (and access to Japan Airlines). The best ecosystem depends less on total partner count and more on which unique partner actually fits your travel plans.
The Citi Strata Premier is best for groceries because it earns 3x points at supermarkets. The Sapphire Preferred earns 3x on online grocery purchases, excluding certain merchants like Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs, but that is already wholly less flexible than Citi’s supermarket category. Venture Rewards earns 2x miles on grocery purchases.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred has the best travel protections of the three cards, no questions asked. It includes benefits like primary rental car coverage, trip cancellation/interruption insurance, baggage delay coverage, lost luggage coverage, and more. Starting June 15, 2026, the card also adds Emergency Evacuation and Transportation coverage. Citi Strata Premier has a solid protection package, but Chase is still stronger overall.
Yes, the Hyatt transfer change is a big deal if you regularly transfer Chase points to World of Hyatt. Sapphire Preferred transfers are changing from 1:1 to 4:3, so 100,000 Chase points will become 75,000 Hyatt points instead of 100,000.
Casual travelers who rarely use Hyatt may care more about the new credits and bonus categories, but Hyatt-focused cardholders should treat this as one of the most important changes to the card.
