Although these cards serve different types of travelers/spenders, we think the Bilt Palladium Card is generally the better overall card. However, the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card provides immense value for folks that live in American Airline hubs.

When the Bilt Palladium Card Wins

If you're a renter/homeowner who's been paying rent/mortgage every month without earning a single point on it, the Palladium fixes that problem in a way no other card does. If you go with "Flexible Bilt Cash", you'll earn 4% back in Bilt Cash on everyday spend and can redeem it toward fitness classes, Lyft rides, dining, and hotel stays. The $200 annual Bilt Cash credit and the up to $400 hotel credit through the Bilt Travel Portal give you a clear path to recoup the $495 annual fee even before you count a single rent payment.

Simply put, the Palladium is one of the strongest "generalist" spending cards out there. Given you earn 2x points on every dollar of eligible spend alongside Bilt Cash (if you elect to earn via Flexible Bilt Cash), you're getting quite a bit for every dollar of spend.

When the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card Wins

The Citi Strata Elite℠ earns back its $595 fee differently.

Its value is front-loaded for travelers who book heavily through cititravel.com, where you can earn up to 12x points on bookings. That's a meaningful advantage.

Outside the portal though, earning drops substantially, and you'll feel it if most of your spend is on groceries, rent, or everyday purchases. That said, the Strata Elite still earns at least 1.5x on all purchases and if the portal is where you live, the Strata Elite's earn rates are genuinely hard to beat.

In short, the Citi Strata Elite℠ is the better pick if you book most of your travel through cititravel.com, but if most of your spending happens outside the portal, that $595 fee gets hard to justify.

The Bilt Palladium, on the other hand, spreads its value across rent, everyday spend, and a broader set of redemptions, which makes it the more flexible pick for most people.

FAQs

Which card has better transfer partners?

Generally speaking, Bilt's partners are better on average, with valuable airline + hotel partners like Alaska, United, and Hyatt.

Citi's list is shorter & generally weaker but hits differently if you're an AA loyalist: the Strata Elite transfers directly to American Airlines. No other credit card's points transfer to American. Citi also currently has a 25% bonus offer for points transferred to Leaders Club.

If you want breadth and flexibility, Bilt has the edge. If American Airlines is your primary carrier, Citi is the cleaner path.

Which card is better for dining?

The Citi Strata Elite earns 6X at restaurants during Citi Nights hours (Friday and Saturday, 6 PM to 6 AM ET) and 3X at all other times. The Bilt Palladium earns 2X on everyday purchases including dining, but also earns 4% in Bilt Cash for every dollar you spend (including on dining spend), which you can convert into points when paying your rent/mortgage.

If your social calendar runs heavy on weekend nights, Citi's rate is hard to beat. For steady, consistent dining rewards across the whole week, Bilt holds up better.

Which card has better lounge access?

The Strata Elite is the winner here because it includes Admirals Club lounge access (albeit limited). Both cards offer Priority Pass Select for the main cardholder + up to 2 guests at no extra charge.
