Amex’s Resy credit is one of the easier dining benefits to actually use. Resy already covers more than 10,000 US restaurants, and you don’t need a reservation to trigger it.

But, most Amex cards issue Resy credits in a weird cadence… including every quarter. And Q3 2026 is coming quickly to a close, so you either need to use the Resy credit or buy a gift card.

Interestingly, if a restaurant sells gift cards directly on its own site, often through Toast, paying for that gift card with an enrolled Amex card can post as a normal purchase at that restaurant’s merchant account and trigger the credit, without setting foot in the dining room that quarter.

What Is the Amex Resy Credit?

The Amex Resy credit gives you money back as a statement credit when you use your enrolled card at participating U.S. restaurants on Resy. There are a number of Tock restaurants that were added as well (Amex acquired Tock in 2024), which increases the number of restaurants where you might be able to buy a gift card and receive the Resy credit. You don’t have to book through Resy or even open the app, you just have to pay with an enrolled Amex card at a qualifying restaurant, and the credit posts automatically to your statement within a few days.

A few things worth knowing before you enroll:

• It’s not exclusive to American Express Platinum Card® . Several Amex cards carry a version of it, just at different dollar amounts and cadences

• On September 15, 2026, eligibility became based on Resy’s list of participating restaurants (including new Tock restaurants) at the moment you pay, not a static list, so a restaurant that worked last month is not guaranteed to work today; you need to look out for the Resy Credit eligible badge

• You must enroll before your first eligible purchase. Amex does not retroactively apply the credit to charges made before enrollment

Can You Use the Resy Credit on Gift Card Purchases?

Technically yes… and no. Amex’s benefit terms warn that gift card purchases may not receive the credit.

However, many people have reportedly gotten credited for making certain types of gift card purchases. It really depends on how the purchase shows up to Amex.

For instance, buying gift cards issued through a restaurant’s Toast page usually seems to work (since it charges simply as the restaurant and as a dining purchase, which is fine).

If you can’t get to a restaurant before your credit expires, a gift card could let you pay now and eat there later. Even if you don’t have a restaurant you’re super excited about, it’s better to buy a gift card than to let the credit expire. A way to test the purchase would be to do a small amount and see if the credit posts. Then do the full amount that you want to do for a gift card.

How to Buy a Restaurant Gift Card That Triggers the Credit

Ok, now that you know the risks of buying gift cards, here’s how you can find restaurants selling Toast-issued gift cards:

1. Use the nextcard’s Amex Resy map to find Resy credit-eligible restaurants. Remember, you need to make sure whatever place you’re buying a gift card from is eligible for the Resy credit in the first place. Restaurants drop off the list without warning, so double check and look out for the Resy-eligible badge on the Resy site.

2. Use the nextcard map’s restaurant listing to find the Toast online ordering page. Many independent restaurants sell gift cards through Toast rather than a generic gift card marketplace, which is critical to making this work

3. Add the gift card to your cart

4. Pay with the enrolled Amex card, in an amount at or above the credit you are trying to use, for example $100 for a Platinum quarter

5. Check your statement in a few days for the credit. If it does not post within about a week, the purchase likely coded outside the restaurant’s own merchant account

Stacking the Resy Credit With Other Dining Rewards

Because the Resy credit is just a statement credit riding on top of a normal card charge, it stacks cleanly with rewards that also key off your card or your payment method, rather than off Resy specifically. I haven’t used stacking with a gift card but I’ve personally stacked rewards when eating out unintentionally.

I went to the restaurant above and was able to redeem/earn:

The Resy credit is one of the few Amex benefits that does not require any advance planning around a specific trip or reservation. You just need a participating restaurant and a few minutes online. Buying a gift card ahead of a slow quarter is the cleanest way to make sure the credit does not just expire unused.

I’ve found Resy eligible restaurants to be the most abundant in New York City, and there’s serious opportunity for stacked dining rewards if you live/visit there.
