The earning structure creates the clearest divide between these cards. The Venture X delivers 2x miles on everything, functioning as both a travel card and a daily driver, while the Sapphire Reserve offers categorical based earnings that reward spenders with strong categorical earnings on dining & flights/hotels.

That said, the Sapphire Reserve comes loaded with features like Points Boost, which can push redemption values up to 2 cents per point on select hotels and airlines through Chase Travel, versus the Venture X's flat 1-cent-per-mile value. It also carries several credits & benefits for StubHub, OpenTable Dining, and Apple TV/Music.

Both cards come with extensive lounge access benefits, but the Reserve really comes out on top with guest lounge access. The Venture X doesn't provide any complimentary guest lounge access, whereas the Sapphire Reserve does.

Despite the Venture X's simplicity, we think the Sapphire Reserve has more value overall. However, if you're based in a Venture X lounge hub like Washington DC, you'll likely get more value from it than the Venture X.

FAQs

Does the Reserve or Venture X have better transfer partners?

Chase offers fewer partners (15 airlines and hotels) compared to Capital One's 18 airline and four hotel programs, but quality matters more than quantity here. The Reserve transfers to US-based airlines like United and Southwest, making it the stronger choice if you fly either carrier regularly and want to maximize point value through transfers. Chase also transfers to Hyatt.

Is the Sapphire Reserve better for dining than the Venture X?

The Sapphire Reserve earns 3x points per dollar on dining including takeout and eligible delivery services, while the Venture X earns 2x miles across all purchases including dining. Also, the Sapphire Reserve comes with up to $300 at OpenTable Exclusive Tables restaurants. If you eat out frequently at participating locations, the credit helps offset the larger Sapphire Reserve annual fee.

Can I have both the Venture X and Sapphire Reserve?

Yes, you can hold both cards at the same time because different banks issue them. Some cardholders pair these cards by using the Venture X for its 2x earning on everyday purchases and the Sapphire Reserve for 3x dining rewards + 4x on direct flights/hotels and access to Chase transfer options like Hyatt. However, carrying both means paying over a thousand in annual fees, so this approach only makes sense if you're actively using each card's strengths and redeeming points at high values.

Which card has better lounge access?

Both cards provide access to 1,300+ Priority Pass locations, but the details differ. The Sapphire Reserve includes Chase Sapphire Lounges with two free guests per visit, while the Venture X covers Capital One Lounge and Landing locations. Starting February 1, 2026, Capital One charges $45 per adult guest and $25 per child (ages 2-17) at their Venture lounges, whereas Chase Sapphire Lounges maintain complimentary guest access.
