TLDR; The Platinum Card® from American Express is offering up to $120 in credit after you purchase a auto-renewable Uber One membership. There is an additional offer to get up to $200 of Uber Cash in your account.
The Platinum Card® from American Express recently came out with a new Uber One benefit. We think it's a pretty interesting credit that helps makes the card ever slightly more justifiable for several folks.
How can you use the Uber Cash credit on Uber rides?
With the Uber Cash credit on the Platinum Card® from American Express, you will receive up to $15 in Uber Cash monthly. The credit will show up when you are about to book a ride using the Platinum Card® from American Express on the Uber app.
When booking a ride, just always make sure your Platinum Card® from American Express is your method of payment—the card itself has to be linked to the Uber app. Using Apple Pay to check out with your Platinum Card® from American Express will not allow you to redeem the Uber Cash.
How can you use the Uber Cash credit on Uber Eats?
The Uber Cash works almost identically on the Uber Eats app vs the Uber app for rideshare. You’ll have to link the Platinum Card® from American Express to your Uber Eats account and use the card to redeem up to $15 in Uber Cash monthly. Like I mentioned above, do not use Apple Pay—you’ll receive no credits using this payment method.
My experience with Uber Cash on the American Express Gold Card
A neat benefit on the American Express Gold Card is that you receive up to $10 of Uber Cash credit per month to use on your Uber app/account. This totals to be up to $120 in Uber Cash credit annually. Its been a credit that I’ve treasured over the past several months. I’ve been able to put it to use many different ways.
My girlfriend lives in Boston and she usually takes the T (public transportation) for her daily commute. Most months this year I have offered her the credit to use for an uber ride in the mornings. Its been nice to give to her when shes having a slow morning or public transportation is down.
I have a car so I don’t have many opportunities to use the Uber Cash credit. Although its nice when I go to a bar with friends and we need to take an Uber home. Its also nice if you are on vacation and you need to take a couple Ubers—you can save yourself up to $10 a month.
When I first got the American Express Gold Card in January, I thought I wouldn’t be able to put the Uber Cash credit to use. Turns out I’m wrong so far. I find that most folks do not take very long and costly Uber rides so this Uber Cash credit can go farther than you think.
How does the Uber One membership work for Uber rides?
With an Uber One membership, you can earn 6% back on rides and get priority access to the best drivers. The 6% that you earn shows up as Uber One credits. You will not earn Uber One credits on tolls, tips, taxes and fees. These Uber One credits can be used for future rides.
How does Uber One work for Uber Eats?
You’ll be able to get $0 delivery fees on food, grocery and other orders on orders over the minimum subtotal with the Uber One membership. You can save up to 10% off on delivery and pickup orders above the minimum subtotal.
Can you get benefits through Uber One for car rentals?
I have never heard of Uber rentals until recently but you can earn 10% Uber One credits when you rent with Uber. This service has been around since 2021 but I must be living under a rock.
What are the downsides of the Uber credits?
You may be wondering if there’s any potential downsides to the Uber credits offered through the Platinum Card® from American Express. I’d have to say that it depends on the person. If you are like me, you want to get the best possible value no matter the effort it might take.
The Uber Cash credit is something you have to remember to use monthly in order to get close to the max value. Also, you have to make sure every time you check out you select the Platinum Card® from American Express and don’t use Apple Pay.
Not only that but in order to get the Uber One membership credit, you have to buy an auto-renewable membership. So if you ever decide to cancel your Platinum Card® from American Express, you have to remember to cancel the Uber One membership as well.
For some folks, this may not be worth the hassle. It makes it so you have to think of what rides will get you the best value or when to order food and how much food to order through Uber Eats.
If you are looking for a straightforward and simple card, the Platinum Card® from American Express is not for you. It comes with a bunch of amazing credits that require you to keep track of monthly and/or quarterly. There’s good value there but you might be too busy or not want to keep track of them all.
How do the Uber credits stack up to the Lyft credits on the Chase Sapphire Reserve®?
On the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you can earn up to $120 in ride credit through the Lyft app/platform. In order to redeem the credit, it operates in a similar fashion to the $200 (potentially) Uber Cash Credit—you have to link the Chase Sapphire Reserve® as a payment option on Lyft.
Let’s compare the credits on Uber with the Platinum Card® from American Express and Lyft with the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. We’ll put aside the Uber One membership for now.
The Platinum Card® from American Express offers up to $15 of monthly credit with Uber while you also get up to $20 as a bonus in December (totaling up to $200). The Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers up to $10 of monthly credit with Lyft (totaling up to $120).
I find the Uber credits to be much more useful as you are more likely to get a full ride covered monthly with the $15 credit vs the $10 with Lyft on the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. As a semi-regular user of Lyft and Uber, I’ve noticed prices to be quite similar so the amount of credit doesn’t make a difference to me.
Not only do you get more credit on Uber, but you also get access to an Uber One membership with the Platinum Card® from American Express. This is a nice little boost as you’ll get better earning rates with the membership. I wouldn’t value it at up to $120 like American Express does, but it still provides some value.
Do the $120 Uber One Credit and $200 Uber Cash Credit help justify the annual fee on the Platinum Card® from American Express?
Short answer—yes. Frankly, I find more value in the up to $200 of Uber Cash credit with the Platinum Card® from American Express than the Uber One ,embership. The Uber One membership gives you some better earn rates and a way to earn Uber One credits, but its minimal. To me, the Uber One membership is a way for Uber to encourage you to keep coming back to the app to book more and more rides. Not to save a good chunk of money.
Final Remarks
The combination of the up to $200 of the Uber Cash credit and the up to $120 saved on an Uber One membership makes for a solid benefit on the Platinum Card® from American Express. You are getting the premium version of Uber which will allow you to get peak earnings. And you’ll save money on at least one Uber ride or Uber Eats order a month with up to $15 monthly credit of Uber Cash. If you use Uber or Uber Eats at least once a month already, these benefits are well worth it.
Personally, I can see good value with these credits. I may not use Uber for rideshare regularly but I can definitely see myself using the Uber Cash credit to order food. It’s really nice since you don’t have to order delivery in order to use the Uber Cash credit. Whether your preference is for rideshare or ordering food, there’s great potential with the Uber Cash credit and the Uber One membership.
