The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the better overall pick for travelers who value travel protections, flexible Chase Travel redemptions, and an easier-to-use hotel credit. The Citi Strata Premier® Card is better if you want stronger broad earning at supermarkets, gas and EV charging stations, restaurants, air travel, hotels, and CitiTravel.com bookings + want American Airlines as a transfer partner.

TLDR

  • Choose the Preferred if you want stronger travel protections, a $100 Chase Travel hotel credit, and up to $120 for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS.
  • Choose Citi Strata Premier if you want 10x on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked through CitiTravel, need American Airlines access, or want broad 3x earning on air travel, other hotel purchases, restaurants, supermarkets, gas, and EV charging stations.
  • Both cards charge a $95 annual fee, but Chase has the larger welcome offer: a limited-time 100,000 points after $5,000 in 3 months (this bonus is ending July 30, 2026 at 3 pm EST) vs. Citi’s 60,000 points.

When Chase Sapphire Preferred Wins

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card wins if you want a stronger travel card, not just a rewards card. It offers 5x on Chase Travel, 3x on dining, gas, EV charging, select streaming, online groceries, and vacation homes at select brands, plus 2x on other travel worldwide.

Its credits are also easier to use for many travelers. The $100 Chase Travel hotel credit applies each account anniversary year to hotel stays purchased through Chase Travel, and the card also includes up to $120 every four years for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS.

Chase also has the better travel-protection package, including trip cancellation/interruption insurance, trip delay reimbursement, baggage delay insurance, auto rental coverage, and emergency evacuation and transportation coverage. The key caveat is that World of Hyatt transfers are changing to a 4:3 ratio for new Sapphire Preferred cardmembers who apply on or after June 15, 2026, and for existing eligible cardmembers beginning October 1, 2026 (see current point transfer bonuses).

When Citi Strata Premier Wins

Citi Strata Premier wins if your goal is earning lots of points across common spending categories. It earns 10x on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked through CitiTravel, plus 3x on air travel and other hotel purchases, restaurants, supermarkets, gas, and EV charging stations.

That makes Citi especially strong for people who spend heavily at supermarkets or book paid travel directly with airlines and hotels. Citi is also the only American Airlines transfer partner, meaning it has a chokehold on anyone in an American hub like DFW, PHL, CLT, or MIA.

The Citi hotel benefit can be valuable, but it is more restrictive: it gives $100 off one hotel stay of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, when booked through CitiTravel.

Which Card Is Better Overall?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is better overall for most travel-focused readers because it has so many (easy-ish to use) credits and benefits.

FAQ

Can I hold both the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Citi Strata Premier?

Yes. They are issued by different banks, so holding both can make sense if you use Citi for supermarkets, gas, restaurants, and paid travel, then use Chase for travel protections, Chase Travel, and its hotel credit. However, you'd be missing out on a general spending card.

Which is better for groceries: Chase Sapphire Preferred or Citi Strata Premier?

Citi Strata Premier is better for groceries because it earns 3x at supermarkets. Chase earns 3x on online grocery purchases, but excludes Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs.

Which is better for travel: Chase Sapphire Preferred or Citi Strata Premier?

Chase Sapphire Preferred is better for travel protections and overall travel benefits. Citi Strata Premier can earn more on certain paid travel purchases, especially 10x on hotels, car rentals, and attractions through CitiTravel.com.

Is the Chase Sapphire Preferred annual fee worth it compared with Citi Strata Premier?

Yes, if you use the $100 Chase Travel hotel credit, travel protections, and 3x or 5x categories. Citi’s $95 annual fee is easier to justify if you can use its supermarket, gas, restaurant, travel, and $500+ hotel-stay benefits.
