The Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® Credit Card is one of the easier $95 airline cards to justify if you regularly leverage the Atmos rewards ecosystem or frequently fly Alaska/Hawaiian Airlines. Its annual Companion Fare, free checked bag and preferred boarding can outweigh the fee, but the card is much less compelling for travelers who cannot use those airline-specific benefits or who want a strong return on every purchase.

How the Atmos Ascent rewards structure works
The Ascent's main benefit does not lie in its earning structure.
Earning rates
The Ascent card earns:
3x points on eligible Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines purchases
2x points on eligible gas, EV charging stations, cable services, select streaming services and local transit, including rideshare
All other purchases earn 1x.
The airline category is competitive for a co-branded airline card, but 2x on select everyday categories is not a reason by itself to pay a $95 annual fee. The largest opportunity cost is the 1x rate on general purchases.
To be honest: not many people are getting this card for the earn rates. These are “nice to haves” not necessarily significant value drivers.
The 10% Bank of America rewards bonus
If you have a qualifying Bank of America consumer checking/savings account or a qualifying Merrill investment account, you’ll also earn 10% bonus points. This is a powerful benefit.

Overall, this is a solid introductory offer for a credit card, especially considering it has just a $95 annual fee. We value Atmos points at 1.5 cents each, so those 70,000 points are valued at around $1,050 in travel. The Companion Fare is a bit more difficult to value since it totally depends on how much you save with your companion’s flight.
That said, we’ve seen people save over $500 with the Companion Fare, especially as you do more complex itineraries with it. So, assuming you can use the Companion Fare reasonably, it can likely save an estimated $200 on your companion’s flight.
How the $99 Companion Fare works
After meeting the spending requirements, the welcome offer includes a $99 Companion Fare. Then, the primary cardholder can receive a Companion Fare code each account anniversary after spending at least $6,000 during the prior anniversary year.
The code can be used for an eligible one-way or round-trip Saver or Main Cabin companion itinerary within North America on Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines when the primary ticket and companion ticket are booked together through alaskaair.com. It must also be redeemed within 12 months of issue, although travel can occur after the code's expiration once the ticket is issued.
Notably, according to the terms and conditions, the entire fare must be paid with the primary cardholder’s Ascent card.
A simple break-even illustration shows why the benefit matters: if the companion's eligible base fare would otherwise be $299, replacing it with a $99 base fare saves ~$200. That exceeds the $95 annual fee, but actual savings depend on the itinerary and whether you would have purchased the second ticket anyway.
Also: keep in mind that the Companion Fare is only usable on a companion. You can’t use it on yourself.

The Atmos Ascent provides several useful benefits for Alaska/Hawaiian Airline flyers. These card-provided perks are typically the key reasons why most people are getting this card.
Free checked bag and preferred boarding
The cardholder and up to six guests on the same reservation can check one bag free on qualifying flights.
The reservation must be marketed by Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines and operated by Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Horizon Air or SkyWest; codeshare flights operated by other carriers are excluded. The airfare must be purchased with the Ascent card, and the primary cardholder must be an Atmos Rewards member.
Preferred boarding follows similar payment and itinerary rules.
Inflight rebate and lounge discount
When using the Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® Credit Card on onboard Alaska Airlines food, beverage and Wi-Fi purchases, you get a 20% rebate as a statement credit.
Cardholders also receive $100 off an annual Alaska Lounge+ Membership purchased with the card. To be honest, I don't know if many people are using this statement credit, but it's certainly worth noting if you were planning on buying a lounge membership.
Status points and redemption reach
Card purchases earn 1 Atmos Rewards status point for every $3 in net purchases.
Status points count only toward elite qualification and cannot be redeemed for travel. For example, if you spend $30,000 in purchases, you’ll earn 10,000 Atmos status points (putting you halfway through to Atmos Silver status).
Who the Atmos Rewards Ascent Card is best for
Generally speaking, the Ascent is best for anyone in the Atmos/Oneworld ecosystem who doesn’t have Alaska Airlines status.
Consider the card if you:
Fly Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines often enough to use the checked-bag and boarding benefits.
Can spend $6,000 during each anniversary year and use the resulting annual $99 Companion Fare.
Want to build an Atmos Rewards balance or add status points through card spending.
Have an eligible Bank of America or Merrill account and can receive the 10% points bonus.
Consider another card if you:
Already have Alaska Airlines status since that already grants a free first checked bag and priority boarding benefits
Don’t have a companion to travel with
Want flexible rewards that are not tied to a single airline program.
