TLDR; The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is now offering 100k Capital One Miles after you spend $10k in the first 6 months. An amazing deal to get a ton of Capital One Miles.

Capital One is offering 100,000 Capital One Miles after you spend $10,000 in the first six months from the account opening on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card. This offer has been available previously but it's also the best welcome offer Capital One has ever offered on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

How do you hit the spend required to get 100k Capital One Miles?

If you normally spend $10,000 or more in six months, then you have nothing to worry about. If you are hoping to get the welcome bonus for the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card but are concerned about hitting the spend, there’s a couple of ways to figure this out.

Let’s say you go out to dinner with a bunch of friends and everyone puts their card down. Instead of doing this, pay for the dinner on your card and have everyone venmo you.

Or you live with other people and someone else usually gets the groceries. You could instead get the groceries yourself and use your Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card. And you could even get groceries for an extended period of time so that you are fronting the cost within the 3 month spend period for the welcome bonus.

Another excellent way to hit the spend amount is to use your card for work reimbursements. Let’s say you are booking a flight or rental car for a business expense—put it on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card! There’s no reason why you couldn’t do this if the company is expecting you to pay for business expenditures and then get reimbursed on the back end.

What is the annual fee on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card?

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has a $395 annual fee—it’s a cheaper card than some of the more premium cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ($795 annual fee) and American Express Platinum Card® ($895 annual fee). And it has more benefits than some of the cheaper travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ($95 annual fee).

How does the new offer compare to previous offers on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card?

The previous offer on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card was that you could get 75,000 Capital One Miles after spending $4,000 in the first three months from the account opening. As someone who doesn’t spend more than $4,000 or $4,500 in three months, this offer is more appealing to me. The $10,000 spend in six months is a stretch for me and you are only getting 25,000 more Capital One Miles.

I mean, think of it this way—you get 75,000 Capital One Miles for $4,000 spend but then you have to spend an additional $6,000 to get 25,000 miles. Not worth it in my opinion.

I also think you could hit another welcome offer with the $6,000 of spend. For instance, you could go for the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card or Ink Business Cash® Credit Card offers where you will receive $900 in cash back after spending $6,000 in the first three months from the account opening.

How can you use 100,000 Capital One Miles?

Capital One miles are strong, with access to a variety of travel partners like:

  1. Air Canada Aeroplan
  2. Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  3. KLM/Flying Blue

I've been able to use ~100k Capital One miles to book nonstop business class from Hong Kong to Boston/San Francisco/New York.

Likewise, you can get business class seats on Air France for around 62,500 miles one way.

The biggest downside of Capital One miles is that there are no major domestic US transfer partners (do we count JetBlue?)

What travel partners does Capital One have?

Capital One has a variety of airline & hotel partners with varying rates.

Airline Partners

  • Capital One has a 2:1.5 transfer ratio to EVA Air and Japan Airlines Mileage Bank.
  • With JetBlue it’s a 5:3 transfer ratio.

All of Capital One’s other airline partners have a 1:1 conversion rate.

  • Aeromexico Rewards
  • Air Canada Aeroplan®
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • Finnair Plus
  • Flying Blue
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • TAP Miles&Go
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • Virgin Red

Hotel Partners

  • I Prefer Hotel Rewards has a 1:2 conversion ratio.
  • Choice Privileges and Wyndham Rewards have a 1:1 ratio.
  • Accor Live Limitless has a 2:1 ratio.

What are the earning rates on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card?

These are the earning rates for everyday spend with the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card:

  • 10 miles per $1 spent on hotels and car rentals booked via Capital One Travel
  • 5 miles per $1 spent on vacation rentals and flights booked via Capital One Travel
  • 2 miles per $1 spent on all other purchases

These are extremely straightforward earning rates and the 2 miles per $1 spent on all other purchases is an excellent base earning rate.

How does the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card welcome bonus compare to the Chase Sapphire Reserve® welcome bonus?

Right now, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is offering 125,000 Chase points after you spend $6,000 in the first three months from the account opening. Personally I find that Chase has the most valuable points in the whole points ecosystem. And you get an extra 25,000 points while spending $4,000 less in total. And the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offer might get even better within the next few days.

According to Doctor of Credit, Chase sent out an internal memo detailing that some clients may be eligible for a targeted offer. This targeted offer includes 200,000 Chase points after spending $10,000 in the first six months from the account opening.

Either way, I would go for the Chase Sapphire Reserve® welcome bonus if I were you. I know there is a $795 annual fee in comparison to the $395 annual fee on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, but you can always downgrade the Chase Sapphire Reserve® to the $95 annual fee Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

Final Remarks

If you are looking to get into the Capital One points ecosystem, it might be worth taking advantage of this 100k miles welcome offer on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card. 100,000 Capital One Miles can go far on Capital One’s travel portal or with the numerous Capital One airline & hotel partners.
